Flower of life – Meaning & Drawing

Among the most interesting symbolisms in our history is the flower of life. It is a very harmonious, but at the same time complex drawing. It starts with a circle and from its multiplication a pretty ornament is created.

Used by many cultures and religions over the centuries. Everyone interprets the flower of life a little differently. What they have in common, however, is that it is about our origin and how we multiply in the world.

Flower of life in the esoteric sense

This is how the flower of life is created

To draw the “Flower of Life” you need 19 circles. The first of them is placed exactly in the center. All others then arrange themselves in equal distances to each other. From these overlaps numerous ovals (lenses) are formed. Thus each circle receives a kind of “flower”, from which the name can be derived.

In addition, we can recognize quite other symbols within this drawing. So there was a big room for interpretation for different cultures.

In this context it is also spoken of “sacred geometry”. This sees in all forms and symbols a blueprint with deeper meaning. So to speak a creative system, which is omnipresent.

The creation of the flower requires exactly four steps. Which are called:

• The first circle,
• Vesica piscis,
• The Egg of Life,
• The fruit of life.

Another way of looking at it assumes that in this symbolism the creation of all life is united. To produce the drawing or engraving (eg. on a gemstone) one needs exactly 7 steps. As much as cell division takes to create new life.
No wonder that many religions and worldviews integrated the flower into their scriptures.

Constant change through geometry

The circle knows no beginning and no end. It is closed in itself and nevertheless it forms numerous intersections in the flower of life. Because everything follows a fixed pattern, the overall picture appears very harmonious. Some users even attribute magical properties to it. If we look at the symbolisms in this area, we find indeed very often circles and curved shapes.

Although only the circle is used, various shapes are formed in the Flower of Life. We see ovals, curved lines and some more. By a slight change of the arrangement, even angular forms can arise.

Other origins

As already mentioned at the beginning, the symbol is not only used within esoteric topics. Art and architecture use the flower relatively often. Many churches, temples and other large buildings are adorned by it.

Near East

That’s why archaeologists keep coming across their illustrations. At the moment probably the oldest representation was found in the Near East. The palace of King Aššur-bāni-apli had a large doorstep. It can be seen today in the Assyrian section of the Louvre. Researchers assume that the carpets laid out there served as a model for the ornamental structure. However, the flower does not seem to have served a religious purpose here.

Another find was made in the Egyptian Abydos. There the flower was sighted on pillars of the Osiris sanctuary. However, researchers have not yet been able to date exactly when the symbolism may have originated here.

China

The male guardian lions in the Forbidden City of Beijing also possess the symbol. They carry a ball with this ornament on it. As part of the Gate of Supreme Harmony, they have a certain meaning. Other guardian lions of the complex also raise spheres. On them similar images with hexagonal patterns can be seen.

Europe

On European soil, the flower of life was used much later. The first finds date back to the 17th century. and 18. The flower dates back to the nineteenth century. Who would like to look at it once locally, can visit the following places:
