UEFI terminal (command line) boot mode

Is there a way to invoke terminal (command line) boot with UEFI? Need to reinstall vmw-tools from the command line (GUI is not showing at the moment as the vwm-tools are absent). Booting into the (VMW) firmware interface does not provide a command line boot option.

Solus is VMW guest with the disk encrypted.

Ctrl+Alt+F1-F6 does not produce a tty. Various boot command-line manipulations, such as:

systemd.show_status=true
resume= (always removed)
quiet splash text
quiet splash=text
systemctl disable lightdm
systemctl set-default multi-user.target
console
terminal
terminal=console

proved futile and none/neither succeeded to boot into a plain tty. always the gui starts at some point during the boot process and then the screen goes blank/black.
